What is a life in the UK test?

The Life in the UK test or British citizenship test is one of the requirements that individuals who want to become permanent residents of the UK or apply to be British citizens need to fulfil. The British citizenship test is an examination used to determine applicants knowledge of life in the United Kingdom.  It is a test that consists of a multiple choice exam made up of 24 questions to be answered in 45 minutes. Applicants need to answer 18 questions correctly in order to pass the exam. All the questions are based on the Life in the UK: A Guide for New Residents Handbook, which comprises six chapters covering a number of subjects from the history of Britain, its people customs and traditions to the political systems and laws that govern the United Kingdom.

What do you need to book the life in the UK test?

Once you feel ready to take the test you have to register with the Life in the UK online booking service. This should be done at least 7 days before taking the test. In order to book your test, you will need to provide a valid proof of identity, a debit or credit card to make the payment and an email address to register your account. Where can you take the test?

The British citizenship test can be taken at over 60 life in the UK testing centres distributed across the country. At the time of booking your test, you will be presented with a choice of testing centres close to you and the availability to take exams at those locations.

How much does the Life in the UK Test cost?

The life in the UK test costs £50, which will need to be paid prior to taking the test. If an applicant has to re-take the test, the fees will need to be paid again.

How can you prepare for the test?

There are many free and paid online resources to prepare for the test. Life in the UK Test Web provides a good compilation of questions and answers covering the contents of the “Life in the UK: A Guide for New Residents (3rd Edition)” handbook used to test applicants on the topics of the book. What is the test pass rate?

According to the UK Visas and Migration Department of the Home Office, a total of 748,613 Life in the UK tests were taken between the 2nd quarter of 2010 and the 3rd quarter of 2014, of which 185,863 tests were failed. Therefore, the pass rate during this period was 75.17%.
